THE DOMINICAN REFLECTION CENTER presents Gardening and Spirituality: Propagation, Reflections for Our Life
Seed - Poppy, Cosmos
Needs - moisture, warmth, air, usually darkness. Wash pots, fill with fast-draining medium (sandy, or perlite/vermiculite)
Pray: In faith we plant these seeds in expectation of emerging life. May the good seeds in us also sprout and bring forth life.
After germination, remove cover and expose to light, not direct sun for first day.
Transplant after lots of roots have developed in the 4-pack that we're using. After first set of true leaves appear, make sure bright light is provided so plants are not stretching. You may begin pinching back after 2-3 sets of leaves appear. (Cotyledons or seed leaves are the very first to appear). Handle gently, a spoon works well. You don't want to damage the stem.
Cuttings - Sage, Rosemary
Best to do tip cuttings when actively growing. Make hole in soil so cutting is not jammed into soil. Cut flush just below node/bud, strip any leaves which would be below soil line, Dip woody cuttings in rooting hormone. Insert into hole being careful to leave no airspace as you firm the soil around. As callus forms, roots develop from this area.
Pray: In faith we wait patiently, may we too sprout roots that go deep into life-sustaining areas.
To create humid environment, place plastic bag or upturned glass over the pot. Place in bright light/sun. Be sure to allow for air exchange every day or so.
Layering - Mint
Naturally occurring as runners or you may force. Soil made richer by adding organic matter - worm casings, peatmoss.
Pray: As the one becomes many, may we give away pieces of ourselves to those things and people which you God are calling us to.
Division - Chives
Best done in spring or fall to minimize shock to plants.
Again, enrich soil. Use knife, flat spade or fork in the garden. As long as there are some roots, new plants will form.
Pray: ( Invite participants to respond with their own prayers ).
